How do I verify a practitioner's license?

Search the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions License Verification tool at op.nysed.gov/verification. Enter the practitioner's name or license number to confirm their license type, status, and expiration date. This covers physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses licensed in New York.

How do I check board certification?

Use the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Certification Matters directory at certificationmatters.org. It shows whether a physician is certified by an ABMS member board (such as dermatology or plastic surgery) and when certification expires. Board certification is voluntary and separate from licensure, but it signals additional training and ongoing evaluation in a specialty.

How do I verify hospital privileges?

Hospital privileges are not publicly reported in a single national database. The most reliable approach is to ask the practitioner or practice directly which hospital they are affiliated with, then call that hospital's medical staff office to confirm. You can also ask whether the provider carries malpractice insurance, which most credentialed practitioners are required to maintain.

How do I confirm procedure-specific experience?

No single official registry tracks procedure volume, but you can ask the provider directly: how many times they have performed the specific treatment, what their complication rate is, and whether they have additional certification or training from the device or product manufacturer. Reputable practitioners will answer these questions without hesitation.

How do I check for complaints or disciplinary actions?

Search the New York State Department of Health Physician Profile at health.ny.gov/professionals/doctors/conduct for physicians. For other licensed health professionals, disciplinary records are available through the NYSED Office of the Professions at op.nysed.gov/verification. The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) DocInfo service at docinfo.org also aggregates disciplinary actions across state boards for a small fee.
